Long time, still crnching

So what’s been happening in the last 6 months?
Sporting
Well, I admit I’ve spent far too much time on http://www.runsaturday.com which is now a 2500+ member site with lots of useful features for runners, cyclists, windsurfers and beyond. I’ve also had some commercial approaches on this site - but none that have made it anywhere significant [...]

Ski holidays… a barometer on the economy?

For the last three winters we’ve always gone on a ski holiday for xmas.
We always book late and we always head to a 3 or 3-and-a-bit star catered chalet somewhere in France. Generally, the prices have been:

2005 - £400
2006 - £450
2007 - £520 (we treated ourselves to a better location - but we also got [...]

Going dark

You may have noticed a slight dip in output recently…
The main reason for this has been I’ve been very busy working on a new website - expect the announcement shortly after Xmas.
However, please don’t worry that there’s a lack of crnchd news. Here are some of the highlights from the last week of BBC news:

A nice NestaEgg (sic - sorry!)

Excellent - at last I can post some good news
There was big news for technology startups reported in the Guardian over the last weekend.
The National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (aka Nesta) together with the UK government have announced a new one billion pound fund specifically for pre-revenue technology startups.
There’s still [...]

Some more UK startups I’ve seen…

Following on from a previous post, here’s some more UK startups who I’ve seen recently.
All these companies I’ve seen listed under a variety of blogs, meetups, etc. All of them look interesting!
http://uk.bookingbug.com/ - provides a customisable booking service for various types of meeting organisers with a Freemium-revenue model.
The next three companies are all London based [...]

It’s not just about the crnch

I’ve heard from a few people who’ve read various posts on this blog and as a result I’ve realised that I’ve not really given them much to go on about my life outside this blog….
If you are out there and are interested, then I’ve added a few other links to the roll on the blog, [...]

googocalypse? (Or don’t believe everything you read in the blogosphere)

I got sent this link by a friend - the headline is:
“Google has been quietly laying off staff and up to 10,000 jobs could be on the chopping block according to sources.”
If you read further down and also browse the comments, it’s one contains some of the most anti-Google web material I’ve ever read… things [...]

Where’s the good news?

For a few months now I’ve noticed quite a difference between the doom and gloom of the predictions of where the economy is heading (and the doom and gloom of the stock and currency markets) and the generally more upbeat mood of people I meet everyday.
However… sadly this does seem to be changing more and [...]

Eastern promise…

A few year’s ago a few colleagues of mine were very convinced (and convincing) of the software development capabilities of Eastern destinations such as India, China, Thailand, Malaysia, etc. - and with all the outsourcing we’ve seen those colleagues certainly had a point.
More recently, however, it’s a slightly closer East that I’ve noticed - East [...]

Yet more meetups

If I’d only waited a few days before compiling my list of “startup meetups”, then I could have just borrowed a ready made list from Techcrunch UK - see http://uk.techcrunch.com/2008/11/03/upcoming-startup-events-and-a-techcrunch-uk-eventparty/
Admittedly their list might be slightly more comprehensive than mine… although it doesn’t have (not does it want to have) the techie-only based meetings.
